Welcome

Welcome to the weblog for Cyrus R. Sabri. Here, you may find Sabri’s major speeches and unpublished works.

Sabri (1954-2014) was a philosopher, poet, design and planning practitioner and professor, and author. He was born and raised in Tehran, Iran, and lived in Pennsylvania, California, and Hawaii later in his life.

Sabri received a Master of Science in Architecture from the National University of Iran, a Master of Urban Design from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.[Click here to see his resume.]

Soon after receiving his doctorate, Cyrus joined his partner, Kit Kurtz, in a jewelry-making business. After a decade in jewelry, Sabri moved with his young family to Tehran, with the goal of contributing what he had learned to his home town. He started work for the city.  In 1997, he began lecturing for the Ph.D. program in Architecture and Urban Planning at Azad University. He later accepted positions at other universities in Tehran as well as Feather River College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in the United States. He

Sabri focused his professional energy in Iran. He not only impacted the physical environment with projects such as the design of the landscape surrounding Milad Tower, the sixth tallest tower in the world; he also helped shift design pedagogy and process. With experience in four design realms (architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, and urban planning), Sabri sought to relate the disciplines in a synergistic interdisciplinary studies and work.  Something he saw lacking when he started teaching was a well-rounded Landscape Architecture graduate course. Sabri became passionate about filling this gap. He supplemented the design process in the classroom and in the field. In one of his major projects, Sabri worked with UNICEF and Landscape Architecture colleagues in Bam after the 2003 earthquake to bring children into the planning process. He brought a unique outlook to every project. Yet, he cared deeply about his students and saw himself foremost as a mentor.
